Makarska

Here, modern hotels and luxurious private villas stand side by side with Venetian buildings and a magnificent medieval Venetian fountain. The city was founded by the Romans in 533 AD and was called Mucurum.

The city is divided into two bays by Cape St. Peter. The western bay is home to the resort area, beaches, and hotels, with the Marineta promenade stretching along the coast. The eastern bay contains the old town and yacht moorings. The city’s main historical attractions are concentrated in its historic center, which is a classic example of an old Dalmatian settlement with narrow cobbled streets and colorful building facades. It is here that all the music festivals and concerts take place during the summer.

St. Mark’s Cathedral

Located in the center of Kachich Square, it is the main religious landmark and architectural monument. The construction of the church began in 1700 at the initiative of Bishop Nikola Biyankovich and lasted for 56 years. The consecration took place in 1756.

Inside, in the right altar, lie the relics of Saint Clement, the patron saint of the city and diocese, brought from Rome in 1725.

Main Altar: Considered the most beautiful in the cathedral, it is the work of the Venetian master Pietro Onigo.

Altar of Our Lady of the Rosary: Located on the left; decorated with an image from the late 17th century by Felice Tironi.

Altar of the Holy Cross: Contains life-sized wooden sculptures depicting the Stations of the Cross.

Organ: A modern instrument installed in 1970 (the previous one was destroyed by the earthquake in 1962).

Church of St. Peter

Built on the ruins of early Christian churches in the 13th century, the church is small and ascetic in size, shaped as a regular rectangle with a narrow apse. On the left side of the altar, the tombstone of the Kachich family has been preserved to this day, featuring an image of a dragon. After its first destruction in the 13th century during one of the battles, the church was completely destroyed and later restored in the Baroque style. In 1962, the church was again destroyed due to a strong earthquake and was only restored in 1992. Only once a year, on June 29, the Day of St. Peter, a service is held in the church.
