The first chamber of the cave, known as the Atrium, has been known to the local inhabitants since ancient times. In ancient times, it was inhabited, and the earliest cultural layers date back to the early Neolithic period. Various clay artifacts and fragments of bones were found here, and in the deepest layers, there were horns, shins, and thighs of Cervus dama and jaws of Ursus spelaeus. In 1913, a new species of cave spider was discovered in the cave, which was named Stalita gireomettai.

For more than 20 years, the caretaker of the cave has been Marko Punda. Before him, his father was the caretaker for 55 years, and even earlier, his grandfather Stipe was in charge. It was he who, at the age of 12, accidentally discovered the second chamber of the cave in June 1903 while chasing a pigeon.

The total area of the two chambers is 8,500 square meters. The first chamber is located at a depth of 65 meters, and the second at a depth of 107 meters. The cave was opened for tourist visits on December 15, 1929. It has a very diverse composition of minerals: silicon, limonite, pyroxene, magnetite… Stalactites and stalagmites in the cave grow quite slowly, adding one centimeter every 350 years.

The first chamber of the cave was known to the local inhabitants long before Stipe Punda, the grandfather of the current owners of the surrounding lands, entered through a narrow opening in the rock into another chamber while chasing a pigeon at the age of 12 in 1903. The cave was officially opened for tourist visits on December 15, 1929.

The unique feature of this cave is that the temperature inside remains around 15°C year-round. The cave is one of the most beautiful natural gems of the karst region, and in 1963, it was declared a protected geomorphological natural monument.

Entering the cave, you step into a magical world... Step by step, downwards, the real world lets us go... The daylight no longer illuminates our path...
