The sculpture consists of two parts: a bronze fist depicting a "fig," positioned high on the wall, and a large bronze funnel (pirja) on the ground. A stream of water from the fist is directed precisely into the center of the funnel, symbolizing futility or "pouring from emptiness into emptiness." The "fig" gesture -a fist with the thumb between the index and middle fingers - is a traditional Mediterranean sign of defiance or rejection.
It is located in the heart of the pedestrian zone, at the northern end of Marmontova Street, near the Split Croatian National Theatre. The sculpture was designed by Kazimir Chraste. It was installed in 1998 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the most unusual sculptures in the world. The fountain is equipped with meteorological sensors that monitor weather conditions. In the event of strong winds, the system will automatically shut off the fountain.
